TPU film (Thermoplastic Polyurethane Film) is a high-performance material that combines the elasticity of rubber with the processability of plastic. It features excellent wear resistance, temperature resistance and environmental friendliness. Its functions such as water resistance, breathability and self-healing of scratches make it widely used in fields like protective films for electronic products, car wraps and medical protective clothing.

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer) is mainly divided into aromatic TPU and aliphatic TPU according to the type of diisocyanate used in the hard segment.

Aliphatic TPU

Aliphatic TPU, lacking benzene rings, offers exceptional resistance to yellowing and can maintain its transparency even after five years of exposure to sunlight.Aliphatic TPU film is often used in outdoor environments or in applications where yellowing resistance is extremely demanding due to its excellent yellowing resistance. It is often made into car cover film, color change film, paint protection film, and outdoor display advertising cloth.

Aromatic TPU

Aromatic TPU, on the other hand, easily oxidizes and turns yellow under UV rays. Therefore, high-end invisible car covers often use aliphatic TPU as their base material.Aromatic TPU films have a wider range of applications. This material is widely used in many fields such as shoes, bags, inflatable products, medical products and industrial products.

Types of TPU membrane

Polyester TPU film

It is a thermoplastic elastomer film made from the polymerization of polyester polyol and diisocyanate (such as MDI). It combines the elasticity of rubber with the processability of plastic. Its hardness ranges from Shore 60A to 80D, and its temperature resistance extends from -40°C to 120°C. Its thickness typically ranges from 0.01 to 2 mm.These products are widely used in applications such as invisible car covers, shoes and bags, medical protection, and automotive interiors. For example, medical-grade products are FDA-certified and biocompatible; they are used as waterproof and breathable layers in sports shoes and can adapt to the needs of curved screens.

Polyether TPU film

It is a high-performance thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer film, polymerized from polyether polyols, diisocyanates, and chain extenders. Its molecular structure consists of alternating soft segments (polyether chains) and hard segments (urethane), combining the elasticity of rubber with the strength of plastic. It is widely used in shoe materials, luggage, medical protection, automotive interiors and waterproof clothing. The main difference between polyether TPU and polyester TPU lies in the soft segment structure: polyether TPU uses polyether polyol, while polyester TPU uses polyester polyol. This structural difference affects the material's hydrolysis resistance and low-temperature performance.

The difference between TPU Membrane and other films

TPU can be reprocessed by melting through thermoplastic processing technology, while traditional PU is mostly a thermosetting material and is difficult to recycle. Its typical physical properties include: tensile strength can reach 2 to 3 times that of natural rubber (about 60MPa for polyester-based TPU), elongation 410% to 550%, and wear resistance far exceeds that of conventional plastics such as PVC.

In terms of environmental friendliness, TPU does not contain plasticizers, can be melted and recycled, and meets environmental protection standards such as RoHS, while some PVC films have the risk of heavy metal migration. TPU film and PU film show significant differences in performance: PU film is known for its high transparency and gloss, making it suitable for scenarios requiring optical display, such as electronic tags. However, it has relatively weak weather resistance and wear resistance, and is prone to yellowing and brittleness after long-term exposure.

It achieves outstanding wear resistance (with a wear index 3 to 5 times that of PU) and tear resistance through a hard segment micro-region structure. Moreover, after being treated with a special formula, its UV resistance is enhanced by more than 50%, making it suitable for harsh environments such as outdoor sports equipment. Compared with PET film, the elastic modulus of TPU is as low as 0.5-5 mpa, and it can withstand tensile deformation of over 300%, which is far superior to the rigidity performance of PET (elastic modulus 2000MPa).

However, the latter is better in transparency and dimensional stability, making it suitable for electronic screens that require hard protection. Although TPE film and TPU both belong to thermoplastic elastomers, their oil resistance and mechanical strength are relatively low. The resistance of TPU to acids, alkalis and oils gives it an advantage in high-end fields such as medical devices. In addition, the moisture permeability of TPU film reaches 3000-10000g/m²/ day, featuring both waterproof and breathable functions. In contrast, traditional films like PVC completely block water vapor.

Although the initial cost of TPU film is relatively high .However, its comprehensive cost advantage in long-term use is significant.

It features an extremely long service life, low maintenance costs and other advantages, as well as enhanced protective effects and improved ‌ processing efficiency.
